Korean Cold Perm: How It Is Done in Seoul, Prices and How Long It Lasts

Thin rods, no machine, a soft wave that moves: what I learned about the Korean cold perm in Seoul.

Cold perm texture after drying

In short. A Korean cold perm is a perm without heat. The hair is wound on thin rods, and the Korean solution and the timing set the shape, with no machine involved. The result is a softer, more natural wave than a digital perm, at its most defined on wet hair, and it lasts 3-5 months, longer on thick hair. I learned it one-to-one at MASSTIGE HAIR Academy in Seoul in August 2026.

How a cold perm is done

In August 2026 I took individual training in cold perm and root volume at MASSTIGE HAIR Academy with Hong Jihoon, the academy's creative technical director. We worked on TENGRITY solutions.

The method is simple to describe. The hair is divided into strands and wound on thin rods, which are held in place with bands. The Korean solution goes on, and from then on the clock does the work: no heat, no wires, no machine. A neutraliser then fixes the new shape.

On the live model Hong Jihoon wound the hair on pink rods. What struck me was how much the curl changes in the last step. Right after rinsing, the spiral is tight. After drying with a diffuser it opens up and gains volume, and that is the curl you live with.

Cold perm vs digital perm

Both are Korean perms, both use Korean solutions with a neutral to slightly acidic pH, and both are setting perms: the curl appears as the hair dries in its compressed state. The difference is heat, and it changes the result.

How the machine side works is in my article on the digital perm machine.

One observation from Seoul surprised me: in Korea the digital perm is more common than the cold one. In Russia, where I work, it is the other way round.

Who a cold perm suits

From what I see in my own practice, a cold perm is the better choice when:

  • the hair is fine or not very thick, and a heavier curl would weigh it down;
  • the cut is a bob or another short shape, and the goal is volume and movement rather than a defined curl;
  • you want a relaxed, beachy wave and don't mind refreshing it more often;
  • it is your first perm and you would rather not commit to six months.

If the hair is thick, falls below the shoulders and you want a curl that shows clearly on dry hair, a digital perm usually fits better. When I can't tell from photos, one test strand settles it. Price and time in Seoul

On the salon menus published by Koreabridge and checked on 24 August 2026, a cold perm at Seoul Hair Salon was listed at 140,000 ₩ and took about two hours. That is a single salon's menu, not a city average, and salons change their prices, so check the current menu before you book. Full price tables for every type of perm are in Korean Perm in Seoul: Types, Prices and Time.

How long a cold perm lasts

A Korean cold perm holds for 3-5 months. Thick, healthy hair keeps the wave closer to five months, fine and porous hair closer to three. The wave doesn't drop off at once: it softens gradually, and because there is no hard line at the root, the regrowth blends in.

Care is the same as after any Korean perm. No washing for the first 48 hours, then a gentle sulphate-free shampoo, air drying or a diffuser on low heat, and fingers or a wide-tooth comb instead of a brush on dry curls.

What the photos show

When you look at cold perm photos, check two things before judging the result. First, wet or dry: right after rinsing the curl looks much tighter than it will in daily life. Second, rod diameter: the thin rods we used in August gave a small spiral, while larger rods give a looser wave. The photos from both of my Seoul trainings are in Korean Perm Photos: Curls from Seoul.

Questions

Is a Korean cold perm the same as a regular perm?

The method is the same family: no heat, rods, solution and neutraliser. The difference is the solution. Korean solutions work at a neutral to slightly acidic pH, while a classic cold perm uses a clearly alkaline one. Which brands Seoul academies work with is in Korean Perm Solutions.

Can I get a cold perm on a bob?

Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons to choose it. On a bob, a cold perm gives volume and a soft wave rather than a defined curl.

Does a cold perm work on fine hair?

Usually it is the gentler option for fine hair because it doesn't weigh it down. A digital perm is also possible with a careful temperature and a smaller rod diameter, decided after a test strand.

Can a cold perm be combined with root volume?

Yes. In August I trained in both together. Root volume is a separate technique done only at the roots; I describe it in Korean Root Perm for Volume.

Why does the curl look tighter in the salon than at home?

Because it is wet. A cold perm is at its most defined straight after rinsing and relaxes as it dries. Judge the result on dry hair.

From the editor. I do both Korean cold and digital perms in Moscow at the Versiya Lab studio, one price by hair length for both: 18,000 ₽ for a bob to 39,000 ₽ for hair below the waist, as of 22 October 2026.
