Korean Root Perm for Volume: Technique, Price, Photos
Volume at the roots with no crimp and no line as it grows: how the Korean root perm works and where it is done.
Oksana Prisyazhnaya, founder and editor. 22 October 2026, Gangnam, Seoul
In short. A Korean root perm works only at the roots, on one line at the crown, and leaves the lengths as they are. It lifts the root away from the scalp so the hair leaves it at a wider angle, which reads as volume. There is no crimp, so nothing visible grows down the length: over 3-4 months the volume simply fades. I learned the technique at MASSTIGE HAIR Academy in Seoul in August 2026.
What a root perm does
The root perm, 뿌리펌 on Korean salon menus, is for hair that lies flat. Two situations come up most often: the lengths are fine but the hair sticks to the head at the crown, or a digital perm has grown out and the volume at the top has gone. A root perm gives height at the roots and leaves the ends exactly as they were. It doesn't add a curl to the length.
It is a cold technique: Korean solution, no machine. A digital perm machine can't reach the very root, so root volume is always a separate step. It can be done on its own or on the same day as a perm on the lengths.
How it is done: what I learned in Seoul
In August 2026 Hong Jihoon, the academy's creative technical director, showed me two ways to build root volume: one inside a heat perm and a separate technique that works with both cold and heat perms. Which one you use depends on whether the lengths are being permed too.
The part I found most useful was zone choice. A root perm is never done along the hairline or at the very front of the crown, and never over the whole head. Only one line in the crown area is treated, and its position depends on the shape of the head:
- where the bone already gives volume, that area is skipped and the line moves, for example behind the ear;
- where the head is narrow or the hair sinks, that is where the line goes;
- where there is no volume at all, the work starts from the top.
Root volume is always the final step of the procedure. One more thing Hong Jihoon showed on a demonstration: without support under the root, a strand lies flat however it is wound. The volume comes from the angle the root leaves the scalp at.
Korean root perm vs boost up and other methods
Several procedures promise volume at the roots, and they are easy to mix up. They differ in the solution and, above all, in what you see as the hair grows.
Method | How it works | As it grows out |
|---|---|---|
Boost up | Cold solution on pins, a fine crimp at the root | The crimp stays until cut and becomes visible lower down |
Fleecing | Backcombing plus solution | Softer line, but the root area stays tangled |
Classic root perm | Alkaline solution on rods | Clear line, treated hair is harder than the rest |
Carving | Weak solution, light volume | Almost no line, lasts 1-2 months |
Korean root perm | Korean solution, neutral to slightly acidic pH, zone chosen per head | No crimp, the volume fades without a line |
The reason is chemistry. Alkaline solutions open the cuticle strongly, so the treated section ends up harder than the rest of the hair. Korean solutions are gentler and leave the treated hair closer in structure to the lengths.
In Seoul I also asked about the old Korean root perm on mini rods, thin short sticks. Hong Jihoon said it is rarely done in Korea now, because it grows out unevenly and leaves creases. He had bought a set once, tried it a couple of times and sold it.
Volume perm: what Korea does most now
Hong Jihoon told me the most requested technique in Korea right now is the volume perm, 볼륨펌. When I asked whether that was because it is faster, the answer was no: it barely marks the hair, and over time only the volume relaxes, with no visible line on the regrowth. Who it suits
A root perm is a good fit for fine, soft hair without volume, for thick but heavy hair that lies flat, for regrowth after a digital perm, and for anyone who wants lift without a curl. Hair cut to a bob or the shoulders works especially well. On hair below the shoulder blades a full perm usually makes more sense, because the weight of the length pulls the roots down. Coloured hair is fine as long as it hasn't been bleached; bleached hair needs restoring first. Very short cuts usually don't get a perm at all.
Price, time and how long it lasts
On the Seoul salon menus published by Koreabridge and checked on 24 August 2026, a root perm at id Hair Gangnam was 80,000 ₩ and took about 90 minutes. A digital or setting perm combined with root volume took 3-4 hours. These are single salon menus, so check the current one before booking.

A Korean root perm lasts 3-4 months, less than a full digital perm. Hair grows about a centimetre a month, the treated section moves away from the scalp, and the volume fades on its own. One care tip: keep masks and conditioner off the root zone.

Questions
Will a root perm show at my hairline?
No. The hairline and the very front of the crown are left untouched, so nothing shows near the face.
Can I get a root perm together with a cold or digital perm?
Yes, on the same day, as the last step. The cold perm is described in Korean Cold Perm, the machine for the digital one in Digital Perm Machine.
Is a root perm the same as boost up?
No. Boost up holds volume with a crimp that has to be cut off later. The Korean root perm lifts the root with no crimp, so only the volume fades.
Which solutions are used for a root perm?
In August I trained on TENGRITY solutions. Which brands Seoul academies work with is in Korean Perm Solutions.
Does a root perm suit everyone?
Not bleached hair, and not very short cuts. The full list of who a Korean perm suits is in Korean Perm: Who It Suits, How Long It Lasts.
